Before you declare

Three things to check

Gift Aid applies to eligible donations from individuals and requires a valid declaration.

01

You are donating personally

The donation must be from you, rather than a limited company or another person.

02

You pay enough qualifying tax

Your UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax must cover the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations that tax year.

03

You give permission

Headway Devon needs a Gift Aid declaration authorising the charity to make the claim.

Gift Aid questions

Clear answers to common queries

Open a question below. For advice about your own tax position, use official HMRC guidance or speak to a qualified adviser.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid allows Headway Devon to claim 25p from HMRC for every £1 donated by an eligible UK taxpayer.

Who can make a Gift Aid declaration?

An individual who has paid at least as much UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax in the tax year as all the Gift Aid claimed on their donations.

Can pensioners use Gift Aid?

Possibly. Eligibility depends on the tax paid, not age. Tax on a private pension, savings or capital gains may count.

Can a joint donation be Gift Aided?

A Gift Aid donation must be attributed to an individual. If one partner is eligible, the donation should be made and declared by that person.

Can I support more than one charity through Gift Aid?

Yes, provided you pay enough qualifying tax to cover the Gift Aid reclaimed by all charities you support.

Can Headway Devon claim Gift Aid on CAF vouchers?

No. Gift Aid cannot be claimed again on charity vouchers or cheques where tax relief has already been applied.

What if my tax circumstances change?

Please tell Headway Devon if you no longer pay enough qualifying tax so the charity does not claim Gift Aid incorrectly.

Can higher-rate taxpayers claim extra relief?

Higher or additional-rate taxpayers may be able to claim further tax relief. Check current GOV.UK guidance or speak to a tax adviser.

Sponsored events

Special rules can apply

Sponsorship may qualify, but benefits received by a participant, participation costs and how donations are recorded can affect eligibility. Contact Headway Devon before collecting Gift Aid if you are unsure.
